"What's Hypochlorous Acid?"
Updated: Jan 26
My client asked me to write an education piece about Hypochlorous Acid (HOCL). My first reaction was “what the hell is Hypochlorous Acid?”. Little did I know it’s one of the most effective, safest, least corrosive compound on the market and it’s one of the leading compounds against the COVID 19 virus on hard surfaces. I took a quick look at the cleaners under my sink and found several popular brands that contain HOCL.
Anytime you use the word “acid” in sentence it conjures up images of toxicity, nasty chemicals, and the Exxon Valdes. So I set out to research Hypochlorous Acid (HOCL) to dispel fears and misinformation about it. I’ve read enough scientific material that I was considering getting a Phd in bio chemistry!
Social distancing and masks are one thing; but we’re exposed to solvents, sanitizers, and disinfectants every day. I want to focus on Hypochlorous Acid because it seems to be one the most talked about disinfectants around.
I’m not an expert but I can give you the nuts-and-bolts facts along with footnotes so you can check it out for yourself. The references are from science journals.
1. What is HOCL? It’s naturally produced by white blood cells to fight bacteria, viruses, and other nasty pathogens you might contract. You can download a full article here. The same compound can be commercially produced and combined with other cleaners like bleach, or sold alone.
2. How is it made? The main ingredients of HOCL are water, salt, and electricity. That’s all. In fact, it’s so easy to make, you can buy your own HOCL Generator for home. Combine salt, water and zap it with electricity and you have Hypochlorous Acid.
3. Is it effective against the COVID-19? Microbac Inc. is the USA’s largest testing laboratory for Environmental, Food/Nutrition, and Life Sciences. They signed off on it, and clearly tell you it’s effective. You can download a full scientific report here. Health Canada and United States Environmental Protection Agency have approved it as an effective disinfectant for use against COVID-19
4. Is it safe? HOCL has been around for 15 years and is widely used in dental treatment and open wound treatment. Dentist use HOCL as a rinsing solution after treatment and studies assume a certain amount will be naturally swallowed.
Bottom line, HOCL is no more harmful than swimming in a chlorine swimming pool, or a hot tub. It’s an approved disinfectant in Canada and the US, and is effective against SARS CoV-2 and Covid-19 when applied to hard surfaces. As with all disinfectants, always read the label.
I hope this helps!
